Section 5.1 Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues Section 5.2 The Characteristic Equation
Definition of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Given an eigenvalue compute basis for corresponding eigenspace. Given eigenvalues of A, compute eigenvalues of An Eigenvalues of triangular matrices are discussed. Linear independence of eigenvectors for distinct eigenvalues is defined. Definition of characteristic equation and computing zeros of polynomials. Compute eigenvalues using characteristic equation. Invertible Matrix Theorem relationship with eigenvalues. Definition of algebraic and geometric multiplicity. Geometric multiplicity not on slides, but in video. Definition of similar matrices, important concept for the next section 5.3.
