GOALS OF THIS COURSE: The goal of MTH 099 is to prepare you mathematically for further coursework in mathematics (primarily MTH 111) or related fields (e.g. BAC 120). It does not count toward credits for graduation and does not satisfy general education requirements. It does, however, count as 3 credits toward your current semester enrollment.
EXAMS AND GRADES: This course is graded S/U and will not enter into your GPA. Although all sections of MTH 099 cover the same material, exams and exam scheduling are determined by your instructor who will inform you about them.
FREE ADVICE: You have most likely been exposed to most of the topics covered in MTH 099 before. Maybe you never quite learned them, or have forgotten them. This is your second chance. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you ultimately have to teach yourself. Your instructor and the textbook will help, of course, but you cannot really learn any mathematical subject without working on the problems. You must make the effort to try them, check the answers in the back of the book, ask questions, make sure you see the trick. The problems have been selected to emphasize the most important points in the textbook sections in which they appear. If a topic appears in the section but there are no homework problems about it, you can assume it is of less importance.
Read the textbook sections. This advice is frequently ignored, but reading the text can really help.
Work with a friend. Not on exams, of course, but working on homework problems together is encouraged.
Catch and correct any bad mathematical
habits you may have. The most common bad habits involve being careless with
parentheses and not using equal signs, but there are many others.
