Text: Vector Calculus,, Marsden and Tromba, THIRD EDITION, plus supplemental handouts.
Evaluation: We will have two in-class exams and a final, and some
take-home problem sets. These will count as follows:
2 Exams: 50%
Final: 30%
Problem Sets: 20%
This course will revisit the fundamental ideas of calculus, especially calculus of several variables, at greater depth, and will make connections with other mathematical areas as well as with problems in physics and engineering.
We will cover most of chapters 1 through 4 during the first semester, with Chapter 1 mainly a review. Problems will be assigned in class with periodic problem sets to be handed in. The problems chosen will generally not be the simple calculations you were asked to do in MTH 243. There will also be some problems to be solved using Maple.
The text has an on-line supplement that you can access via the following link. There will be some readings assigned from the "Internet Supplement."
Problems assigned
1.1/5,9,11,13,17,21,23,24,26
1.2/15,17-19,21
1.3/5,9,11,21 (see hints in book), 16ab,26
1.5/7,11,12
2.2/1,2,8,9 and also 10ac, 19, 29
Use Maple or
Prof.
Kaskosz's 3d Plotter
to plot the graph of f(x,y)=xy/(x^2+y^2) and see graphically why the
limit of f as (x,y)->(0,0) does not exist.
