MTH 451/URI
Introduction to Probability and Statistics

Course Information and Syllabus, Spring 2003

Text:  Mathematical Statistics, John E. Freund, Sixth Edition

Prerequisites: MTH 243

Exams and Grading:  There will be two exams and some homework assignments and quizzes. The exams will be of open book type.

TWO HOUR TESTS:                        40 percent

QUIZZES AND HOMEWORK:          30 percent

FINAL EXAM:                                  30 percent

We will cover most of the material from Chapters 1-7. The emphasis will be on the rigorous development of the theoretical basis and fundamental tools of probability and statistics. Many important examples from different areas of applications such as biostatistics, actuarial probability, and industrial statistics will be discussed. Most proofs will be given. The topics that will be covered are:

probability spaces

properties of probability

random variables

discrete and continuous distributions

expectations and moments

elementary limit theorems.

Practice Exams:

Exam 1 (in PDF format)

Exam 2 (in PDF format)

People preparing for actuarial exam will find this course very useful in preparation for Exam 1. To see solved examples of Exam 1  click here:

Computer Requirements

The use of statistics packages such as EXCEL and SPSS or computer algebra systems such as MATHEMATICA, MAPLE, and Scientific Notebook is encouraged. Some computer lectures in some of these systems will be presented, and provided.  Some MAPLE notebooks will be provided and demonstrated in the class. One of the exams may be MAPLE-aid exam.
Most of the problems can be solved by using the graphing calculator.
