Calculator/Mathematica
A Calculator or Mathematica is required for class. Calculator use may be restricted on some exams since more advanced calculators, like the TI-89 can do some of the computations that we expect you to learn to do with just pencil and paper.

Course Content
This course presents the main concepts and terminology of linear algebra that play an essential role in mathematics and in many technical areas of modern society, such as computer science, engineering, physics, environmental science, economics, statistics, business management and social sciences.

There will be three in class exams this semester and a final exam.

Remark: Makeup exams will only be given to students with an acceptable excuse. The only acceptable excuses, religious holy day, family emergency, school sponsored event, job interviews, or sickness. All absences require documentation. For example, sickness, a doctor's excuse. You must notified me of any religious holy days within the first 2 weeks of the semester. You must let me know before the exam that you will not be able to take the exam in order to be given a makeup exam. All other absences will be given a zero for that exam. No exceptions! Makeup exams will be given at a time that is convenient for both you and me.

Homework will be assigned for section of the textbook we cover. A list of homework problems is posted on this website. Do NOT email your homework to me! Homework must have

Very little tolerance is given to messy homework. If I cannot read it or follow the solution, then it is marked incorrect. I will not accept ANY late or incomplete homework assignments.

Homework score:
(number of correct homework problems)/(total number of homework problems collected) mulitplied by 100 points.

Projects The goals of a project are to use the concepts from linear algebra to solve real life applications. You can work in groups, no more than five students per group. You must use a computer software system to solve these applications. Octave is very easy to use and is free. You can also use Mathematica or Matlab. You can NOT use a graphing calculator, excel, or code written by someone who is not in your group. All projects must be submitted through Sakai using the Assignment tool. Do NOT email the projects to me! Projects must have a list of all the names of students in your group. I will not accept ANY late or incomplete projects.

Attendance and Advice

The math department expects that you will give this course 12-14 hours per week of your undivided attention, in addition to class time. The key to success in this course is the problem material. It is very important that you try all the assigned problems listed on the syllabus. The problems chosen for each textbook section indicate what is important in that section and which ideas and skills you should focus on.

Sakai is being used in part to teach this course. All projects MUST be submitted in Sakai using the Assignment tool. The Sakai site will contain your grades, links, and the Assignment tool for submission of your Projects. That means you should become familiar with using Sakai.
