This course, in the style of a seminar, will consist of a series of 6 presentations over the semester. It is designed for graduate students who would like to investigate the numerical aspects involved in solving problems in finite precision. The course will build upon ideas and concepts from other courses.

1. Linear Systems

• Gaussian Elimination:
• Conjugate Gradient

2. Nonlinear Problems

• Newton’s Method
• Nonlinear ODEs
• Path following problems

3. Approximations

• Special polynomials and applications
• A touch of PDEs
