NOTES:
MTH 141
Section 06
Textbook: Calculus of a Single Variable, 5th Edition, Wiley Publishing
This is a brand NEW edition, so last year’s book will NOT work for this course.
This is a coordinated course. This means there are several other sections of this course that will be taking common midterm and final exams. Thus, we must strictly follow the syllabus. The syllabus, the list of homework assignments, and the dates & times for the midterm exams are available online at:
http://www.math.uri.edu/~jbaglama/classes/2009-2010/fall/math141/
I strongly recommend that you print out the syllabus and the list of homework assignments and keep them in the front of your notebook for this class.
Also, the website above is the official course website and contains course materials and information such as the calculator policy.
Sakai is being used in part to teach this course. That means you should become familiar with using Sakai. I may place important course material in the Sakai course shell. You can access Sakai at the following web address: https://sakai.uri.edu/portal/
Use your e-campus I.D. or your 9-digit URI student number and your @mail.uri.edu email password.
There will be online problems assigned in Wiley Plus throughout the semester. You will be notified in class about these assignments.
There will be assignments using Maple (a mathematics program that is on most of the computers on the U.R.I. campus – including the main library). You will be notified in class about these assignments.
Attendance is required. If you miss class, you must notify me ahead of time via email. See the policy on Make-up Work.
Due to the H1N1 situation, if you are sick, you should not come to class. Please notify me ahead of time, follow along with the syllabus, send any questions to me via email, and get healthy so you can come back to class. You will be allowed a reasonable amount of time to make up any work. Please see U.R.I.’s information regarding the H1N1 flu virus. It’s at: http://www.uri.edu/news/h1n1
If you miss class, you must notify me ahead of time via email. If you do not notify me ahead of time, then you cannot make up the work and you will receive a zero for the assignment. If you cannot take a midterm exam at the regularly scheduled time, you must notify me ahead of time. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to re-take the exam and will receive a zero. Obviously, exceptions will be made in the case of an emergency. However, “I woke up and didn’t feel well” does not constitute an emergency – you need to send an email in a situation like this.
Homework will be collected and graded throughout the semester. You will always get a chance to ask questions over the homework before it is collected.
There will be pop-quizzes throughout the semester. These will be over the homework.
As mentioned, there will be online Wiley Plus assignments and Maple assignments.
There will be 3 Midterm Exams and a Final Exam.
Your grade will be calculated using the formula below:
You may drop your lowest grade on a Maple assignment, you may drop your lowest Wiley Plus grade, you may drop your lowest pop-quiz grade, and you may drop your two lowest homework grades (from the textbook). You then calculate your average grade for each of these categories.
Homework from the textbook is worth 50 points.
Online homework from Wiley Plus is worth 50 points.
Homework using Maple is worth 50 points.
The category “pop-quizzes” is worth 50 points.
Each midterm exam is worth 100 points.
The final exam is worth 200 points.
That is a total of 700 points.
There will be a 1-hour review session before each Midterm Exam (NOT the final exam).
The time and location of these review sessions will be announced during class.
Attendance is required, so please arrive on time.
At times, you will be expected to participate in class and to practice problems as a class.
Be respectful of others in the classroom.
No mobile phones, ipods, or any other personal electronic devices allowed in class.
U.R.I. provides many FREE tutoring services for their students. You can go the Academic Enhancement Center (AEC) which is on the 4th floor of Roosevelt Hall. Also, there is a Supplemental Instructor (SI) that has a regular tutoring schedule. The SI instructor will provide you with the tutoring schedule during class.
Any student with a documented disability should contact me as soon as possible to discuss your accommodations. Students should also contact Disability Services for Students: Office of Student Life, 330 Memorial Union, 874-2098. They will determine with you what accommodations are necessary and appropriate. All information and documentation is confidential.
Cheating is defined in the University Manual section 8.27.10 as the claiming of credit for work not done independently without giving credit for aid received, or any unauthorized communication during examinations. Students are expected to be honest in all academic work. The resolution of any charge of cheating or plagiarism will follow the guideline set forth in the University Manual 8.27.10 – 8.27.20.
