Evaluating Functions

Try Problem 1 on your own, then listen to the explanations by clicking on the link below. If you understand Problem 1, you should easily solve the next two problems.

Problem 1. Let

[Maple Math] .

for any [Maple Math] , construct and simplify as far as possible the difference quotient

Problem 2. Let

[Maple Math] .

For any h construct and simplify the quotient

[Maple Math] .

(A) [Maple Math] (B) [Maple Math] (C) [Maple Math] (D) 0

Problem 3. Let

[Maple Math] .

For any x and h , construct and simplify the expression:

[Maple Math] .

(A) [Maple Math] (B) [Maple Math] (C) h (D) [Maple Math]

Hint: Think carefully what is [Maple Math] . Rememeber, what ever you substitute for x in the function h, the function takes the squre of it, multiplies it by 5, and subtracts 4 times the thing you substituted. Hence,

[Maple Math] .

Now subtract h( x ) from the latter expression.
