MTH 107/1
Introduction to Finite Mathematics
Course Information and Syllabus, Spring 1999

Exams and Grading: There will be two exams and some homework assignments and quizzes.
TWO HOUR TESTS:
40 percent
QUIZZES AND HOMEWORK: 30 percent
FINAL EXAM: 30 percent
We will mainly cover Chapters 2-4, 7, and 8. The topics that will be covered are very interesting subjects from the combinatorics, the probability and statistics, and the linear programming that have wide applicability in daily life. The prerequirement for this course is basic arithmetic. This course will involve development of some important and simple concepts and their simple applications rather than the development of algebraic techniques.
The most important advice is simple: Read the textbook! An important part of your mathematical education is acquiring the knack of learning mathematics on your own, from books. By reading the text before class you will have a better chance of making good use of your time in class. Don't worry if you don't understand everything. Ask questions in class and read the material again later.
The other important advice is also simple: Come to the class!
The homework problems are the core of this course. An important purpose of the problems is to make you think through and master the ideas of the subject so that you can confidently apply your knowledge in new situations. You will learn a great deal from honest hard work on a problem, even if you don't succeed in solving it. Read the text material before working on the problems.
The use of calculators is strongly recommended especially for Chapter 4 dealing with statistics. Any scientific calculator with basic statistics functions will do it. The brief introduction of using the calculator for the basic statistics will be given in the class.
