Course Information
About the course
MTH142 is a second course in calculus. You should plan on spending
about 7 hours per week, outside of class, working problems and reading
the text. As in MTH 141, we will approach new ideas and problems from algebraic,
graphical, and numerical points of view.
The main topics are Methods of Integration (Chapter 7), Applications
of Integration (Chapter 8), Numerical and Power Series (Chapter 9), and
Differential Equations (Chapter 10).
At the conclusion of this semester you will be able to:
-
1.
-
Calculate integrals using a variety of algebraic and numerical techniques.
-
2.
-
Solve problems in geometry, physics and probability using integrals.
-
3.
-
Solve differential equations by graphical, numerical and algebraic techniques.
-
4.
-
Calculate approximations to functions using the concepts of Taylor and
Fourier expansions.
-
5.
-
Determine properties of convergence of numerical and power series.
Evaluation
There will be three exams given outside of class, on Monday evenings
at 6:00 PM, on the following dates: October 5, November 2, and
November 30. A comprehensive final exam will be given during the
regular final exam period. Locations will be announced in class.
Your course grade will be calculated according to the following distribution
of points:
Three exams at 100 points each ........ 300 points
Quizzes/homework/classwork*.......... 100 points
Final Exam......................................... 200 points
