Exams and Evaluation

There will be three exams given outside of class, evenings at 6:00 PM, on Oct. 7, Nov. 4, and Dec. 2. A comprehensive final exam will be given during the regular final exam period. Locations will be announced in class. The exams will count 100 points each, the final 200 points, and 100 points will be based on work your instructor assigns in class. This may include collected homework, quizzes on the homework and readings, or projects.

The exams will reflect the variety of the homework problems. Do not expect to be asked merely to solve homework problems with the numbers changed. The best way to prepare for the exams, and to develop confidence in your ability to solve problems, is to work on the homework problems as suggested. Your class may be slightly behind or ahead at any given time. Some problems may be done in class or as homework, as your instructor chooses.

Maple Notebooks for MTH 141

We will use Maple V Release 5 in this course. Maple is a powerful mathematics software system with which you can plot graphs, perform algebraic manipulations, do numerical calculations, and write programs. You will learn to use Maple in MTH141 and continue using it in further mathematics courses. Your calculus text came bundled with a book, Getting Started with Maple that will serve as a Maple reference and introduction. We will schedule Maple training sessions during the semesters. See the news box above for information. The Maple software is available in the campus computer labs and can be purchased from the RI Book Company at Kingston Emporium at a special highly discounted price for use on your personal computer.

Our work with Maple will be organized into Maple Worksheets which you will be able to download from this site and will also be available in the campus computer labs.

Click below to download an introductory worksheet. Save the file to either your hard drive (if you have Maple on your own computer) or a floppy disk if you will be using Maple elsewhere (most likely in one of the campus labs). You can then start Maple and open the saved file.
